Islanders Beach, Hilton Head

Image
On our second day in Hilton Head, we decided to go to Islanders Beach. This is 15 minutes away from the hotel. It's less popular than Coligny Beach, plus we arrived mid-morning so there weren't too many people yet. We spent a couple of hours there, then headed back to the hotel to check out and drive back to Atlanta.

Coligny Beach, Hilton Head

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Hilton Head, which was very close to Coligny Beach. Our room wasn't ready yet when we arrived so we decided to check out the beach first. It looked too crowded from afar so we just let the kids enjoy the splash pad. We came back in the evening when there were few people around.  Beach time is good for the soul.=)

Coastal Discovery Museum, Hilton Head

For the second part of our road trip, we drove to Hilton Head, North Carolina which was about 1 hour away from Savannah. The main goal was to see the beach, but I also checked what other attractions are in the area. The Coastal Discovery Museum came up so we stopped by before heading to the hotel.

Downtown Savannah

Our second day in Savannah was spent exploring River Street and the downtown area. We joined a walking tour that started from Johnson Square to Forsyth Park, but did not strictly follow the guide as we stopped and did side explorations as we wished. We had lunch at Forsyth Park and let the kids enjoy the splash pad. We stopped by famous Leopold's Ice Cream before heading back to the hotel.

Wormsloe Historic District

Our TV has built-in screensavers and one of the pictures is of the trees of Wormsloe Historic District. I love how the majestic trees create an arch over the road and it was something I really wanted to see for myself. We barely had enough time to get to Wormsloe (from Fort Pulaski) before it closed, complicated by getting lost along the way because Google maps took us to the wrong place. Cars were already leaving but we still drove inside anyway. That was fortunate because we didn't know the gate would only open for people coming out.=) We took a few pictures by the entrance and drove some distance under the trees until asked to turn back by the staff. There's a museum and some other attractions inside that we did not get to see, but it was still worth it.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

For the July 4th holiday, we went on a road trip to Savannah and Hilton Head in North Carolina. Our first stop in Savannah was Fort Pulaski .  Fort Pulaski suffered from two natural disasters in the last year. The visitors center was closed off because part of the roof collapsed from the tornado. But the fort itself was intact. We joined the tour and learned interesting facts about the fort's history.  2015 visit to Fort Pulaski here .
