Neil's First Sleepaway Camp
Two days after Neil's 9th birthday, we sent him off on his first sleepaway camp. It was for four nights, from Sunday to Thursday, organized by our church. The kids needed to have finished 3rd grade before they can go. We asked Neil if he was interested and he said yes, eventually. It took a few days of encouragement and reassurance that he would receive help if needed. I think we got the last spot because we took our time to decide.
He was both excited and anxious on dropoff day. As I was. But we let him go and trusted that he will be in good hands. The camp was in Ocoee, TN and the parents were warned that there might be very few updates because of reception issues in the mountains. I was checking the church's social media accounts to get updates and saw one with Neil on video on the third day.
I took a midday break from the office on Thursday so I could be at the church when he arrives. He was suntanned and happy. He said camp was awesome. His counselor shared a few pictures and videos with me as well. It was a great experience for him and us.
Here's the video from church. You can see Neil at 2:45, 2:59, 3:23.=) https://vimeo.com/226214474
The theme for camp was 'You've Got a Friend in Me' and will use characters from Toy Story. Neil hasn't seen the movie so we watched the night before camp started. I have forgotten how good that movie was, especially in the eyes of a child. Neil liked it a lot.
I organized his clothes by day in ziplock bags and told him where everything was. Still, the sandals that he was supposed to use for the adventure race remained unused because he said he couldn't find it. He had to remove his shoes as they wallowed in mud. Toinks! :S
