The Year of the Lord's Favor

January 2, 2011

Yey! Finally Richard and I were able to sit in church service together.  Since November, we've been on shifts watching Neil while one is in service.  We attended the 12 noon service at Victory Alabang (first time since the renovation, place looks huge and great) and it coincided with his nap.  He was asleep during the preaching and very cooperative during praise and worship.  I showed him the words on the screen and he attempted to sing with the congregation. =)

2011 is the year of the Lord's favor.  This was the theme of today's preaching by Pastor Sonny.  Still very funny, but packs a punch wrt to the lessons and revelations.

Luke 4:14-21

14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
   because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
   to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

What does the Spirit bring for us this new year?
1) Fullness of power and grace - power to change lives
2) Freedom - from wrong attitudes/habits, debt and poverty, sickness, etc
3) Favor - attitudes of approval or liking, overgenerous preferential treatment, act of goodness beyond what is expected.

What is required of us is to guard our hearts...

Psalm 5:12
Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield."

2 Corinthians 6:1-2
As God's co-workers we urge you not to receive God's grace in vain.  For he says,
"In time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you."
I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation.

Proverbs 8:35
For those who find me find live and receive favor from the Lord.

In Christ, we have fullness, freedom and favor.
