US May-June2010: Flights
Recounting the US trip last year since I missed blogging about it...
These were our flight schedules for the whole trip:
May 7: Manila - Narita - Los Angeles* - Atlanta. Depart 8:05AM, Arrive 8:31PM*
When we were checking in at NAIA, we were informed that the Narita-LA flight was delayed and were asked if we prefer going straight from Narita to Atlanta instead. Of course! Another blessing. This shortened our travel time by about 6 hours and one less transit. Better for Neil.
We had awkward flight arrangements. I was traveling on business and in business class while Richard and Neil's tickets were coach. I didn't feel good about the disparity but business class tickets were more than 2x of coach so... Anyway, Neil was still able to sit with me most of the time.
Neil struggled only on the Manila-Japan leg. There was a point when he was crying so much, and we couldn't do anything to soothe him. He must have been feeling physically uncomfortable, probably the pressure in his ears. He was a lot better on the other flights, slept better and just played with the touch-screen. The guy on the next seat even commented that Neil travels really well. He played peek-a-boo with Neil, which the little boy enjoyed very much.
May 22: Atlanta - Los Angeles, Depart 1:45PM, Arrive 3:51PM
We stayed 2 weeks in California, split between LA (Richard's sister) and San Diego (my sister).
June 7: Los Angeles - Portland - Narita - Manila. Depart 8AM, Arrive June 8 10:10PM
We had issues with the LA - Portland leg for Richard's ticket because it was apparently cancelled by the Manila agent when he made changes to the flight going to the US. It was very stressful because the Alaska Airlines rep could not get anyone from Delta to help release the reservation so they can rebook it. And so Richard had to go to the Delta terminal, and if you know LAX, they are far from each other. It was getting extremely close to our boarding time. Neil and I just waited and prayed. Then the Alaska agent called us saying the tickets are fixed and Richard got back from the other terminal. I think it took over an hour...
On the Narita-Manila flight, there were empty seats in business class so I asked if Richard can move to the seat next to me. They allowed him, after the food was served.
There are just too many elements that need to be dealt with during trips/flights. We hoped for a hassle-free trip, of course, but the problems that arose were resolved soon enough that the schedules did not have to change.
So that's one whole month from the flight from Manila to the flight from LA.
