Favorite Shows on History

When I watch TV these days, it almost always on History Channel.  I have grown to like their shows and whenever these are on, there's no touching the remote. =)

Pawn Stars and The Pickers are all about buying and selling, with more emphasis on the buying.  Pawn Stars is based in Las Vegas.  The Pickers own Antique Archaeology based in Iowa but picking takes them to the different states.  Kings of Restoration, also based in Las Vegas, does restoration of old and interesting pieces from customers.

The thing that impressed me the most about these 3 shows is that the characters are very knowledgeable about things and are able to give you a history of when they were made, what made them popular, what they are worth, etc.  They are funny and seem like really good guys!

HISTORY's hit series, PAWN STARS, brings viewers inside the doors of a family-run pawnshop in Las Vegas, where three generations of men from the Harrison family grandfather Richard, son Rick and grandson Corey jointly run the business, with clashing and camaraderie every step of the way. This family lives and breathes the pawning business, using their sharp-eyed skills to carefully assess the value of items their colorful customers bring in, objects ranging from the obscure to the truly historic. In small towns, and along America’s back roads, treasures are waiting to be uncovered – valuable relics from history that are hidden in junk piles, buried in barns and stacked in garages. It takes special experts to find there lost artifacts and hopefully turn rust to riches.THE PICKERS follows two of the most skilled ‘’picker’’ Mike Wolfe, owner of Antique Archaeology, and his business partner, Frank Fritz, as they hunt down objects with historical, collectible and pop culture value that have been long forgotten by their owners. Along the way, they meet people whose own stories open a window into American lives and history. (Source)

One of Pawn Star's favourite experts is here with a new series: Rick Dale, who runs Las Vegas based Rick's Restorations, a family business that finds, restores and upcycles cool objects ranging from Cadillacs to Coke Machines in Kings of Restoration. Rick's enthuasism unearths countless historical nuggets, sharing when and why objects were invented and who used them. (Source

I used to also watch Swamp People a lot.  It's a documentary on alligator hunting season in Louisiana.  I got so engrossed with this show because it's was novel to me.  I did not know about the 'culture', how you earn tags based on experience and also learning about how the bait-and-kill works.  Very interesting.  Other noteworthy shows on History are Storage Wars, Stan Lee's Superhumans, Hidden Cities, among others.

Mankind also started airing a few weeks ago.  It's a show about the pivotal moments in human history that have shaped the world as we know it today.  It's very informative and comprehensive.  I think anyone yearning to learn more about world history can start here.  I have not been able to catch all episodes but I hope they release this on DVD.  It's a collectible.

As you can tell, History is my current favorite channel.
