Next to Normal
Next to Normal was the first and only show I've seen on Broadway. I visited New York in November last year and my good friend Joel recommended this play very highly. It was his treat and we got great seats to great show. Next to Normal won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Atlantis Productions adapted this play back in March so Richard and I watched it on his birthday. It had a rerun recently, which Em was able to watch with her friends.
So I've seen Next to Normal twice, 2 different cast in 2 countries. Seeing it for the first time on Broadway was a really wonderful experience. The overall production and the cast were outstanding. Marin Mazzie and Jason Danieley (real-life husband and wife) played the lead roles Diana and Dan Goodman. Marin Mazzie delivered a very intense and emotional performance that made you understand and appreciate bipolar disorder. Yup, that's the theme but I will say no more about it. I usually research movies and shows before I watch them but for Next to Normal, I was specifically advised (admonished?) by Joel not to. He said it's better that I don't know anything about the plot, and he was right. There are elements of the story that will have a greater impact if you just let them unfold... I loved the songs, too. The melodies and lyrics draw you deeper into the story and they adequately convey what unsung words can't. My favorites are: You Don't Know and I Am the One.
I found this video of the cast that I saw on Broadway. They weren't the original cast for the show but they brought Next to Normal to it's final run in January this year.
I loved the play. It was an unforgettable experience that made my first trip to NY extra-special. So when I found out that it was going to be shown in Manila, I had to see it again. The Philippine cast was good, too. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Jett Pangan played the lead roles and gave a different interpretation of Diana and Dan.
Next to Normal is smart, emotional and rock-and-roll. I'm glad to have seen it and it is officially in my favorites list.
