Take Home: For the Husbands

Take Home is a 3-part preaching series in church and the first installment is on Husbands, shared on Mother's Day weekend.=)

The verses are from the book of Ephesians:
21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church...
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

God designed marriage and provided the guidelines on how it should be.  The husband takes the role of the head and the wife is the helpmate.  But these are simply roles and should not be taken to mean that the husband is more important or valuable.  They are called to lead the family but not be dictators in the family.  Headship says "I am responsible" and not "I'm the boss."  It is important to remember verse 21, Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ because this first establishes Christ as the authority in marriage and that fulfilling the roles are also in reverence to Christ.

Verse 25 says love your wives.  The word for love used here is agapao which means seeking the highest good for another person.  It is more than feeling the love, but acting out in love.  Proverbs 18:22 says, He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.

Husbands are called to lead lovingly.  This includes creating an atmosphere in the home where the family flourishes.  It is not by happenstance but by intentional and deliberate effort.

Husbands are called to lead sacrificially.  Sacrifice is giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy.  Jesus has demonstrated the ultimate love and sacrifice.  This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. (1 John 3:16)

When husbands fulfill their role as heads, they are helping fulfill God's intent for the wife and family -- to be sanctified, cleansed and made presentable.
